13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it. John 14:13-14 NKJV

Are you familiar with the meaning of the phrase “pray in the name of Jesus”? Sure you are. We say this all the time.

The phrase “pray in the name of Jesus” is often used by Christians, and it refers to the practice of praying to God and asking for His help, guidance, or protection. The phrase can be seen as a way to identify oneself as a Christian and to show reverence for Jesus Christ. Followers of Jesus believe that He is the only way to reach God, so they pray in his name to ask for His blessings.

This is not only a statement that should be thrown on at the close of our prayers without any consideration. On the other hand, it is an incredible privilege that is given to people who acknowledge Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

One way of looking at it is to consider the fact that we are praying words that Jesus might have prayed. And that is where the power of God begins to take shape in our lives and situations.

Before you can do or say anything in His name, you need to first become one of His followers. Believe in Jesus as the Son of God, believe that He died and paid the penalty for your sin, and fear Him as your Lord and Great High Priest.

Life Is Hard

So many things go on in our lives. We face challenges in our families, personal lives, work lives, church lives, and emotionally.

We face challenges, make decisions, interact with others, and more. It can be difficult to keep track of it all, especially when things are tough. But it’s important to remember that we’re not alone in this, and that there are people in our church who care about us and want to help.

More importantly is that Jesus is there for us even when no one else is. He alone provides the strength and peace that we need to get through anything that life throws our way.

Right now, we are facing a challenge in our church life. Our Church building is somewhat compromised due to vandalism. The power is at a very limited capacity due to electrical wires being violently pulled from their conduit, leaving much of the building in darkness. It has made it impossible to safely worship together at this moment.

This can cause a sense of emotional difficulty as we go through this difficult time. We rely on our time together to encourage one another and have fellowship.

Worship gives us the spiritual and emotional energy we needs as much as we need air.

What we must not forget is our faith, our Lord, and His Glory. He is present and He is still the light of the world.

Along side of this we face our own personal challenges of life. It is these times when we must remember the power and grace that is in the wonderful name of Jesus.

Jesus offers peace.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  (V.1)

In spite to this, the other disciples must have been equally worried because Jesus continued by saying, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” [Plural] The way that Jesus expresses this idea gives the impression that they ought to “stop being troubled” (i.e., they should set their hearts at ease).

After that, he admonished them to continue putting their faith in both God and in themselves. They had become more fragile as a result of their uncertainty and disappointment, and he wanted to encourage them so that they would not completely crumble in the face of the impending disaster.

In this setting we know that Jesus is referring to His departure from their presence to go and prepare a place for them and us. These words reach beyond that moment and into our lives.

No matter what we face or go through, good, bad, or indifferent, we must no be troubled and must believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It’s vitally important to be at peace with our situation(s).

It is Jesus will and desire that we are at peace no matter what we face in this world. Once again in V.27 Jesus instructs us to not let our hearts be troubled, and takes it a step further to say “let it (your heart) be afraid.

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (v.27)

In the place of fear and trouble Jesus gave us peace, His peace that is nothing like the world’s peace.  This peace comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit.

God is Approachable

Since God is holy and we are sinful, the only way to approach God is through His Son, who took the punishment for our sins and clothed us in His righteousness. Because Jesus is the one and only way to the Father, we make our desires known to God through his name.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 NKJV

When we put our faith in Jesus, we can approach the throne of grace that God has prepared for us not as beggars but as beloved children and co-heirs with Christ.

16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. Rom. 8:16-17

As a result of the Jesus’ role as our mediator and high priest, we are able to approach God with full assurance, secure in the knowledge that we will be shown compassion and will discover grace to assist us in our hour of need.

15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Heb. 4:15-16 NKJV

Keep this definition in mind the next time you are about to close a prayer by saying “in the name of Jesus.” The next thing you should do is ask yourself if the thing you want is something that Jesus would want for you.

What we do know is this. Jesus want’s you to have a calm and peaceful heart, He wants for you to be at peace in Him.

My prayer for us is that we see a mighty move of God during this time in our church, and that we are back to worshiping and praising God together soon.
